Updates :)
Updates
well.. so wat`s been happening with my life so far? hmm.... since the last time i blogged... A LOT.... oh boy oh boy.. where do i start? hmm.... but i bet even if i blogged now... no one will read this.. cos i`ve not updated for like.. AGES!!! lolx... oh well... who cares anyways.. :) i`ll just blog.. haha :)

Music Showcase 2008
my faculty(actually just called a pusat.. but we`re used to call it fac.. haha.. syok sendiri =p) had a music showcase production last month on the 19th March 2008 and it was one of the biggest in the history of our showcases because it was held at the Dewan Tunku Chancellor,
the biggest hall there is in University Malaya. We had around >600 people attending the event(some say close to a thousand..) and for me... it was one of the best bitter sweet moments of my university life so far.. :)
The first year students of the music course are in charge of running the show.. which means taking care of the stage management, invitations, publicity, meals, props, and so on. And being one of the ONLY TWO guys in the first year music course, we were "VOLUNTEERED" to take up the 2 busiest post of this showcase, head of the committee(Hao Tian, the only other guy in my class)
and stage manager(me)
well.. planning it was... hmm... the bitter part... gosh.. i had to drive all around the university just to find ppl who can rent to us notice boards for exhibition. we went to place A, they say place B has them, we went to place B, they say either place A or place C has them, we went to place C, they say place A and place D has them. we went to place D, finally they have it. gosh.. sounds a bit like the movie "Just Follow Law" eh? ;) well.. after a mini tour of UM, finally we have the notice boards. Lol.
mind you people, stage managing is NOT a very fun thing to do. Especially when you have people who changes the plans and order of performances, people who don`t give a kahooza`s about other people`s performance and only care about their ownselves, people who are super duper nuper whooper gooper fussy.
after all confusion settled, showtime came. As a performer and the stage manager, i was doubly nervous. lolx.. performers only have to worry about their performance. Me? i have to worry about my performance and the stage management. Gosh! What an experience. lol.. well.. here come the pictures! :) forgive me for the super blur pics though. Not my fault =p some other people took it. Haha!
First up, Gamelan Terengganu, the easiest and most non-fussy ensemble to perform. VERY relaxed and cool. Even their teacher didn`t even bother to appear during rehearsals. HAHA!! but overall, it was a very good and interesting performance. The gamelan is a traditional indonesian ensemble where musicians use the gong, kettles, and many other things to make music out of them. I was in that class and was performing(if u look properly, i`m somewhere in the pic below =p) during the showcase. a rather interesting experience. This particular gamelan(Gamelan Terengganu) is played during the entrance of the King or royal family members. So usually it`s played in a slow pace(*snores*).
Next up there was a solo piano performance by a 2nd year student, Yun Ying. hmmm... kinda zzzz =p
Up next there was a jazz quartet consisting of piano(Joyce Tan, 2nd year jazz piano major), saxophone(Moo Kai Ling, 2nd year saxophone major), Shaker(Tan Su Yin, 2nd year percussion major), and Conga(Matthew Khoo, me, 1st year percussion major). The piece they performed is called "The Shadow of Your Smile", also known as "Love Theme from The Sandpiper", is a popular song. The music was written by Johnny Mandel, the lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. The song was introduced in the 1965 movie The Sandpiper and became a minor hit for Tony Bennett. For more details on the performance, look at pic below.
Next performance is the University Malaya Music course Choir. They sang 3 songs entitled "Oh Danny Boy", "Bunyi Gitar", and the last song "Banana Papaya". A rather interesting choice of song, the last that is. Very interesting performance. Though i would say the lack of guys makes the songs rather.. hmm... dunno? haha... you figure out yourself la ya? :)
Then there was the Caklempong ensemble. Caklempong, a small gong melody instrument which comes from the gong family. It is made from bronze, using the mould technique. Caklempong is flourishes among the Malay Minangkabau communities from Negeri Sembilan. Few instruments such as the seruling buluh, salung, rebana and gong play together with Caklempong to accompany the Pencak Silat, Tari Lilin, Randai and Tari Inai performances. Each player holds two caklempong, taking turns to play and create short melodies. Current performance practice divides these into 3 parts, they are Gereteh, playing the melody, Tingkah and Saua(playing the rhythm in homophonic style).
But for this performance, they had a band playing along with them. During practices, hmm... well.. the band spoilt the history of the caklempong IMHO. lol.. seriously. The repertoire was like the band concert instead of the Caklempong featuring the band. lol..
Next, is the Gamelan Sinkretik. The most fussy, arrogant, snobby, and B*atchy ensemble. Well i dunno abt the musicians la, but the lecturer is. My kahooneys!! Working with her is like working in HELL!! ask me for more details la yea? :) well.. the performance was rather interesting. Way more interesting than the gamelan terengganu.
After that we had a solo violin performance by Jessica Ding, a 1st year violin major, who plays for the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
Next up is Samuel Tan, playing a solo piano piece.
After that, there was the percussion experimental ensemble. A super duper interesting performance in my opinion. Of all times they had to choose latin rhythms when i didn`t join them.. arghghghg!! =.='' they played a rhythm called the calypso and consists of 2 djembe`s, floor tom, bongo, shakers, cow bell, tambourin, and a clave.
The next performance was a jazz band. This jazz band was an invited band. well.. dun really know much about them. but they`re good :) nice songs too! :)
The last performance was called 'House of Rhythm' by the 1st,2nd and 3rd year students. This performance consist of 3 groups of people performing in different places in the house, first one in the living room, 2nd one the bathroom, and the last one is the kitchen. And to end it all up, they had a finale performance where all 3 groups performed together.
i was in the living room group, and this particular performance was one of the best performance for me through out the whole showcase. I enjoyed it the most, during showtime, during practices, and during the planning of the show :)
Well, after hours of work, sleepless nights, and after all the hardwork, what do we do? We go crazy with our coursemates and friends who together with us suffered much pain in the process of planning this showcase.
REALLY crazy :) it was the sweetest feeling of this showcase i ever felt! :)
Well, this showcase marks the end of the showcases in UM for the 3rd year seniors who will be graduating soon. We`ll miss them very much. For me personally, i`ll miss them very much because throughout my life here in this course, i have learnt a lot from them. All the best in your future!! :)

Well, the next update, hehe... well.. this update marks a milestone in my life. 21 years of life. Like in Evon`s blog, a boy in the past, now a man :)
i was very honoured to celebrate my 21st birthday with a group of friends and family(though some were missing.. my apologies to those who weren`t invited or weren`t able to make it). for pics of the event, pls refer to christopher`s blog and link to his photo album :) i`ll just post a few pictures here :)
